Based on the inspirational Cannonball Run movies of the 80s, the Gumball rallies have become synonymous with thrills 'n' spills. Taking a different route each year, they have attracted the great and the good and anyone mad enough to risk their car in the hair-raising 3,000-mile race. Journalist Clement Wilson and ex-champion jockey Richard Dunwoody joined forces and entered their wolf in sheeps clothing Volvo estate in an attempt to outgun the Ferraris, Lamborghinis and Porsches of their fellow Gumballers.
Fuelled by Richard's competitive instincts to be the first across the finishing line and the last man standing at the bar, they dashed down the autoroute, through Spain and into the desert of Morocco, mixing pain and pleasure, as prangs and parties took them from one adventure to another. In this hilarious account they explain why rallying has become so enticing, what it's like to hobnob with the King of Morocco, dance with celebrities in Marrakech, get arrested in Spain and why burning rubber has never smelt so good!
The updated edition includes links to pictures and videos of spectacular vehicular lunacy!
reviews from the paperback edition
"I found myself laughing out loud in public places whilst reading. I advise everyone to read this whilst sat in a park and keep an eye out for the odd looks that you will receive when you break down with laughter!"
"This has been a fabulous read! I have read many motoring, travelling, comedy books, but none that combine all three of these elements into such an encapsulating reading experience"
"All in all I loved this book for its wit and humour - it's fun and I couldn't recommend it more"
Our Gumball Rally 3000 Miles 3 Countries 65 Ferraris Only 1 Volvo Clement Wilson Richard Dunwoody eBook
I LOVE the road rally world, so it was a no-brainer for me to buy this book used. It is ~200 pages, and the first 50 or so are just talking about how the two teammates met and who they were. When the author gets into the "meat of the hamburger", it it hit-or-miss with how the book is. There are portions that are extremely entertaining, where I see an event through another pair of eyes, and heard a few stories I had not known about before. But there are several times where the author diverges into tangents about completely unimportant subjects, and some of them last multiple pages. I was either very attentive to the book, or lost interest, depending on the content. I would recommend this book only for a quick read for a true gumball junkie, and would only recommend picking it up used.Product details

Our Gumball Rally 3000 Miles 3 Countries 65 Ferraris Only 1 Volvo Clement Wilson Richard Dunwoody eBook Reviews
I picked up this book because I am a big fan of cars and had my interest in the Gumball piqued by an article in Vanity Fair magazine.
A very quick an enjoyable read that tells the tail of a journalist and retired jockey's escapades (both on the road and in the pub) during the amazing Paris to Marakech to Cannes Gumball 2004.
However, the book has a lot of British humor and the author is a bit self-absorbed (what kind of journalist would spend so much time writing about himself and his Irish buddies when there are so many other more interesting people around?).
Clement Wilson's wit and the intoxicating mix of fast cars and fast living still make this a worthwhile read. A cannonball run for the 21st century.
and a damned good book. Books about high speed adventures in a Volvo are rare for obvious reasons. This one is just a fun read. Well written and well paced, the only thing it lacks is a British-to-American glossary to clarify a few coloquialisms. Worth the time to read.
